This week, Senators on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources will take part in a key committee hearing on the Section 106 consultation process. It is vital that our members in the states represented on the Committee share with them the importance and effectiveness of Section 106!

ACRA has learned that the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is holding this hearing to begin a discussion in the Committee about Section 106’s effectiveness. Although there is no legislation on the horizon that would threaten Section 106, it is possible that the Senate may take up permitting reform in the near future – and could include changes to the NHPA as part of that.

That’s why it is so important for Senators on the Committee to hear the truth about Section 106: how it ensures a balance between preservation and progress. That it ensures public consultation. That the overwhelming majority of 106 reviews never hold up projects. And that any changes to the NHPA should strengthen the process, not weaken it.
