Historical Research Associates, Inc. (HRA), is seeking an Archaeologist 2 to join our collaborative team in Missoula, Montana. This hybrid role includes a minimum of two in-office days, with regular fieldwork throughout the western U.S.

This position is a term-limited role scheduled to end on December 31, 2026. Depending on performance and future project needs, the position may be extended or considered for conversion to regular status; however, that extension/conversion is not guaranteed.

As an Archaeologist 2, you will be a field director who leads fieldwork and acts as lead author on technical reports. You will perform research, fieldwork, laboratory tasks, and writing as part of a high-performing project team.

• Annual compensation: $62,477–98,658, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Candidates who meet the minimum required experience can expect annual compensation within the mid-range of the band. Those who exceed the required experience and/or possess preferred qualifications will be considered for compensation above the mid-range. Please note that the top end of the compensation range is typically reserved for longevity-based progression.

Who you are:

You are a CRM professional looking to grow your career in a supportive and collaborative environment while actively participating in driving projects to success. You have a knack for developing positive relationships with all levels of the organization.

What you bring:

• A minimum of a Master’s degree in Anthropology or a closely related field with an Archaeology emphasis
• Completion of a Master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation
• Completion of an accredited field school (or equivalent experience)

• At least 3 years cumulative experience directing fieldwork in the western U.S., including leading both survey and testing/evaluation fieldwork
  • Preferred experience: additional years of experience directing fieldwork; directing fieldwork in Montana and surrounding states
• Experience as lead author on both survey and testing/evaluation reports for work in the western U.S.
  • Preferred experience: reporting experience in Montana and surrounding states; reporting experience with multiple regulatory nexuses
• Meeting SOI qualification standards in archaeology

You also have:

• Field proficiency in the use of technology including GPS, online databases, cameras, and computer software
• Technical writing experience and experience using ethnographies, soils/environmental data, cultural resources reports, SHPO databases, GLO plats, land patents, tax assessments, and other sources
• The ability to work in physically challenging environments, in all weather conditions, while carrying field equipment and walking several miles per day across varied terrain
• The ability to develop and maintain positive relationships by listening and communicating effectively, providing and accepting feedback, and resolving conflict via communication and collaboration
• The ability to take direction from project managers and other supervisors and collaborate with team members

Travel:

Up to 50 percent of your time will be spent in the field, and much of that will involve travel outside the local area throughout the western U.S.
