Associate Architectural Historian
The Public Archaeology Laboratory (PAL)
New England/Mid-Atlantic Regions

PAL is seeking an Associate Architectural Historian (AAH) to join our Historic Preservation Team of architectural and landscape historians and preservation planners. This full time, 40-hour per week position is ideal for qualified candidates who are beginning their careers or wish to gain experience in the fields of historic preservation and cultural resource management.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in field surveys to identify historic architectural properties, including buildings, sites, structures, objects, landscapes, and districts in accordance with standard historic property identification methodologies
  • Compiles detailed and accurate notes and logs to document field investigations
  • Takes clear architectural digital photographs that meet state and federal standards for format and coverage
  • Conducts historical research at local, state, and federal archives and online to document the history of surveyed properties
  • Prepares historic property inventory forms and contributes to survey reports, National Register nominations, HABS/HAER documentation, and other types of products
  • Adheres to PAL’s Health, Safety, and Environmental Protection Plan and demonstrates awareness of conditions that may pose hazards to team members
  • Performs clerical and project administration tasks that facilitate PAL operations

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in architectural history, historic preservation, public history, or a related field
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Knowledge of significant trends and events in American history and architectural history
  • Experience conducting historical research
  • Technical writing skills sufficient to write clear and concise architectural descriptions and property history statements
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a project team
  • Proficiencies in digital photography and MS Office software
  • Flexibility to respond to schedule changes on short notice
  • Availability to travel (occasionally for up to two weeks), and to meet the physical demands of fieldwork as required
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

Compensation: $22 to $25 per hour
