Terracon is hiring a full-time Project Archeologist/Principal Investigator in Austin, TX, reporting to the Archeology Team Lead.

This role involves working within the Cultural Resources division of the Environmental Planning Group, collaborating with NEPA Planning and Natural Resources teams. The candidate should be an efficient team builder and communicator, bringing technical expertise to the program.

Responsibilities include supervising, mentoring, and supporting the professional growth of the cultural resources team, managing projects, preparing and reviewing reports, and ensuring adherence to Terracon’s safety culture. The position also entails contributing to business development activities, supporting proposal development, and participating in projects across Texas and potentially in other U.S. regions.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and practices. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on projects.
  • Oversee and participate in project planning for archeological investigations of various types (pre-contact, historic, industrial, rural, urban) and phases (survey, evaluation, and mitigation) located in Texas and adjacent areas and regions, as assigned.
  • Support other non-archeological Environmental Planning projects, tasks, and activities as assigned.
  • Conduct independent pre-contact and historic documentary research.
  • Contribute to proposals, methodologies, and research designs for various types and phases of archeological projects.
  • Oversee work performed by supervisory staff, including field and laboratory technicians, under the direction of the Archeology Team Lead
  • This position will come with opportunities to manage projects according to Terracon’s Project Manager standards and expectations.

Required:

  • Advanced graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related discipline and at minimum, 5 years of experience in the practice
  • Secretary of the Interior (SOI) qualified

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with the Antiquities Code of Texas, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and other pertinent State and Federal legislation
  • Membership in statewide professional associations such as the Council of Texas Archeologists, and/or other evidence of professional engagement in the larger community
  • Previous experience preparing proposals, building budgets, and understanding and managing project finances
