The Interior Department is requesting feedback from the public about its Form DI–1926 “Application for Permit for Archeological Investigations.”

In accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995, federal agencies are required to provide the general public and other Federal agencies with an opportunity to comment on new, proposed, revised, and continuing collections of information in order to assess the impact of information collection requirements and minimize the public’s reporting burden

Section 4 of the Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) of 1979 (16 U.S.C. 470cc), and section 3 of the Antiquities Act (AA) of 1906 (54 U.S.C. 320302), authorize any individual or institution to apply to Federal land managing agencies to scientifically excavate or remove archeological resources from public or Indian lands. A permit is required for any archeological investigation by non-NPS personnel occurring on parklands, regardless of whether or not these investigations are linked to regulatory compliance. To apply for a permit, applicants submit Form DI–1926.

Interior is requesting feedback on:

  1. Whether or not the collection of information in Form DI-1926 is necessary for the proper performance of the functions of the agency, including whether or not the information will have practical utility.
  2. The accuracy of our estimate of the burden for this collection of information, including the validity of the methodology and assumptions used.
  3. Ways to enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the information to be collected.
  4. How might the agency minimize the burden of the collection of information on those who are to respond, including through the use of appropriate automated, electronic, mechanical, or other technological collection techniques or other forms of information technology, e.g., permitting electronic submission of response.

The deadline to submit comments is January 8, 2024.  The ACRA government relations committee is currently reviewing the request. If you have suggestions on whether and how ACRA should file public comments to Interior, please email them to Executive Director Amanda Stratton by January 4.
