Job Summary
Poznecki-Camarillo is seeking a Project Archeologist to join our team. We have an ample amount of work in a stable field. We have long-tenured employees with a very low turnover. PCI is a small firm that has successfully tackled projects with increasing size, complexity, and range of services. Founded in 1981 as a land surveying and engineering firm, we have consistently and carefully added new services and staff as needed. In addition to our flourishing surveying and civil engineering departments, over the last decade we have developed bustling public involvement and environmental practices. Most recently, we have supplemented our environmental group’s portfolio with archeological consulting services.
We are a cohesive, supportive team and are selective in whom we hire. If you are motivated and known to be trustworthy, and if you like to do interesting work, ask questions, and solve problems, you need to apply. Responsibilities will vary based on experience, but may include:
- Preparing and supporting the preparation of documents such as background studies, agency coordination letters, National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 and Antiquities Code of Texas consultation, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) sections, and technical reports.
- Conducting and supervising archeological reconnaissance, pedestrian survey, shovel testing, mechanical trenching, and other fieldwork. Such fieldwork may involve harsh conditions (e.g., remote locations, high heat index, rough terrain). Fieldwork may also involve carrying field equipment, bending/stooping to excavate subsurface units and screen materials, walking for extended periods of time, measuring and estimating using depth perception, and making technical judgments using eyesight and touch (e.g., soil colors and textures).
- Supervising archeological field technicians, crew chiefs, specialized subcontractors, and other technical staff, with particular attention to safety protocols and field procedures.
- Recording archeological resources in the field independently and as part of a field team.
- Supporting or conducting client, agency, and landowner coordination.
- Curating artifacts and field records at state and federal repositories.
- Interacting with project managers, colleagues, and clients in a timely, professional manner before, during, and after project implementation.
- Keeping track of concurrent projects with variations in schedule, size, and complexity.
Education
- Graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, history, historic preservation, or a closely related field.
- Completion of recognized archeological field school.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum two (2) years of archeological field experience, ideally in a North American cultural resources management (CRM) consulting context.
- Registered Professional Archeologist (RPA) certification or eligibility to obtain it within 1 year.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to work successfully independently and with a team.
- Willingness to teach others what you learn as well as ask others for help.
- Positive attitude, flexible, and strategic thinker able to take on various tasks.
- Strong time management, organizational, and strategic thinking skills to prioritize and manage tasks on concurrent assignments in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability and willingness to travel and work in varying conditions.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

- Experience with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) projects and guidance, particularly the Ft. Worth, Tulsa, Galveston, and Albuquerque Districts.
- Experience mentoring, training, and guiding junior staff.
- Experience with a range of Global Positioning System (GPS) systems, drones, tablets, and other field navigation/recordation technology.
- Experience using National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria to assess resources.
- Specialized analytical expertise (ceramics, lithics, faunal remains, human burials, geophysical prospection, etc.).
- Experience with historic buildings, structures, and districts.
- Experience preparing or contributing to technical proposals, scoping, and budgeting.
- Interest in becoming an archeological Principal Investigator on a career development timeline to be discussed with PCI leadership.
Benefits

- Paid Medical/Dental/Vision/Life/Disability.
- 401(k) matching.
- Paid holidays.
- Paid Vacation and Sick Leave.
