About this Position
Pinyon is seeking a full-time, salaried archaeological Field Director with extensive field experience in Arizona (and other four-corner states). A successful candidate will be collaborative, organized, and professional. This candidate will be responsible for conducting and/or assisting in Class I, II and III cultural resources inventories and support permitting and compliance. This position reports to the Archaeological Resources Group Manager and will work closely with Pinyon Principal Investigators and Project Managers. The position will be responsible for ensuring that inventory methods are implemented, and findings documented in accordance with all applicable standards and guidelines.
Responsibilities will include leading and supervising field staff; recording archeological sites (precontact and historic) identified during inventory; preparing National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility recommendations; site testing for NRHP evaluations; monitoring fieldwork quality and reviewing paperwork/notes; conducting background research and preparing desktop assessments; analyzing artifacts; construction monitoring; and writing technical reports. Candidates must be able to identify and record archaeological sites, artifacts, features, soil characteristics, and understand site identification, delineation, and documentation procedures. The ideal candidate should be able to manage time independently, adhere to established budgets and schedules, maintain a professional demeanor, and interact productively with team members to meet project deadlines and team goals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- MS or MA degree in Anthropology or Archaeology
- Meet the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology (36 CFR 61)
- communications skills
- Ability to conduct pedestrian inventory up to 8 miles per day carrying 40 pounds of gear
- Be able to safely perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions
- Knowledge/experience with anticipated/typical Colorado Plateau, Rocky Mountains, Four Corners, and Great Basin cultural resources
- Two to six years of experience conducting Class III cultural resource inventories and associated reporting
- Knowledge of Section 106, Section 4(f) Compliance, ARPA, NAGPRA, Antiquities Act, and relevant state legislation
- Qualified for listing on federal and state permits as Field Director and/or Principal Investigator in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and/or New Mexico
- Knowledge of ASM & ADOT processes from scoping through consultation
- Knowledge of field data collection and site forms
- Field crew supervisory or field director experience
- Technical writing and document review
- Ability to travel
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of colleagues, clients, agencies, and other project stakeholders, of all levels and diverse backgrounds
