Position: Archaeology Curator
Status: Full time, permanent
Location: Ohio History Center, Columbus OH
Salary: $42,000 – 46,500 per year

Summary:
The Archaeology Curator is part of the Archaeology collections team and represents collections within the Curatorial Department, to the organization, and to its site network across the State of Ohio. Time is divided between researching, interpreting, and advocating for Ohio History Connection’s large collection of pre- and post-contact Archaeology collections and acquiring, inventorying, processing, and cataloging collections. Archaeology Curators work with staff and partners to balance preservation of the collections and archaeological features managed by the organization with access to those items and places for tribal members, researchers, and members of the public.
Essential Functions:
- Increase access to and intellectual control of the Archaeology collections through cataloging and records management.
- Actively grow Archaeology collections through active and passive collecting.
- Provide physical access to the Archaeology collections while also following preservation best practices
- Work in tandem with Collections Management staff to provide custodial care for the Archaeology collections.
- Respond to public, professional, and scholarly inquiries.
- Work cooperatively with curators, collections managers, NAGPRA staff, and registrars on the projects and management of the collections storage facility.
- Participate in planning and executing large-scale projects, including exhibits, re-interpretation projects at sites, and grant projects.
- Share knowledge of the Archaeology collections through blog posts and social media, educational and outreach programming, digital projects, and media requests.
- Participate in archaeology excavations as needed, following best practices for surveys, shovel tests, excavations, monitoring, and documentation.
- Assist NAGPRA staff as needed to prepare collections for Tribal Consultation
- Actively participate in the exhibit development process
Required Education & Experience:
- Master’s degree from an accredited institution in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field.
- 3-5 years’ experience working with archaeology artifacts in a museum, at a CRM firm, or in a related field.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for cataloging, handling, storing, exhibiting, and packing artifacts.
- Experience with collections management software such as CollectionSpace.
- Basic skills with ArcGIS and ArcMap.
- Experience doing archaeological field work
- Knowledge of the pre-contact and/or historic periods in Ohio.
- Experience curating and managing a collection of archaeological artifacts in a museum or related institution.
- Experience writing about collections for publications and web platforms.
- Familiarity with scanning two-dimensional materials
- Familiarity with Section 106 processes and NRHP eligibility criteria.
