The Nebraska State Archeology Office seeks a motivated cultural resources professional to join the team as an Archeological Technician. Under the direction of the Nebraska State Archeologist, the teammate in this position assists with conducting background research; performing archeological field surveys, testing, monitoring, and site evaluations; preparing detailed project maps and technical reports; and undertaking laboratory work including cleaning, cataloging, and analyzing artifacts.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Complete archeological field surveys within proposed construction work limits and deadlines.
  • Conduct subsurface testing to help identify, evaluate, and mitigate effects to archeological sites.
  • Complete detailed field documentation including: standardized paperwork, field photography, and GPS documentation.
  • Describe archeological sites, features, and artifacts in the field and create representative sketch maps.
  • Conduct background research on project areas and archeological sites.
  • Prepare, analyze, catalog, and photograph artifacts in the lab.
  • Draft report sections, project maps, field forms, and photo edits for technical reports.
  • Use ArcGIS Pro and ESRI GIS products to document projects, and to read and create technical maps.
  • Properly store, maintain, and clean field equipment.
  • Other duties may be assigned, including but not limited to: helping other departments; participating in interdepartmental committees and working groups; and participating in community outreach events.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of archeological field and laboratory best practices and techniques, diagnostic artifact identification, and site formation processes.
  • Experience with precontact and historic artifact identification and analysis.
  • Understanding of and ability to interpret and apply state and federal cultural resource laws, standards, and regulations.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and handheld GPS technology.
  • Detail-oriented and able to follow instructions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively to meet various project, team, and agency goals.
  • Flexibility with and adaptation to ever-changing project needs, conditions, and deadlines.
  • Must be committed to the organization’s core values and demonstrate them regularly in their work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Post high school course work in anthropology or history AND one season archeological field school or field experience.

PREFERRED: Bachelor’s degree in anthropology AND one season archeological field school or field experience AND experience in Great Plains or Nebraska culture, history, and artifact assemblages.

OTHER:

This position requires frequent in-state day trips and occasional overnight travel lasting up to one week. Must possess a valid driver’s license and have ability to drive state vehicles or provide independent transportation. Applicants must be able to work in strenuous outdoor conditions, hike long distances over rough terrain, carry heavy equipment, excavate by hand with trowels or shovels, and screen sediment in a variety of weather conditions including: extreme heat and cold, sun, rain, snow, and wind.
