This position is located at Lake Mead National Recreation Area (NRA). Lake Mead NRA is the first and largest national recreation area; it consists of 1.5 million acres and annually ranks in the top ten most visited units in the National Park System. The Superintendent manages all park operations, including a workforce of approximately 250 employees, over 4000 volunteers, and administers a complex multi-million-dollar budget. Superintendent responsibilities include:
- Manages and maintains a positive working relationship with the park employees concerning the delegated authorities related to the management and preservation of the cultural, historical, and natural resources of the park.
- Monitors and evaluates the operating efficiency and effectiveness of all phases of park operations.
- Responsible for preserving, protecting, and restoring the areas’ natural, scenic, and cultural value. The Superintendent maintains and operates an inventory of park physical facilities necessary for visitor use and area administration. Directs the maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and operation of all facilities in the park including historic and cultural structures, trails, visitor centers, contact stations, picnic areas and campgrounds, wilderness areas, wetlands, water, and wastewater treatment facilities, and roads and highways.
- Provides leadership in the development of policies, standards, and procedures which govern the professional conduct of work related to the administration and implementation of programs, including the functional areas of public use management, resource protection, resource, and environmental education and interpretation, fiscal and human resource management, park maintenance, visitor services, safety management, concessions, park partnerships, public affairs, and budget planning and execution. Serves as a key NPS leader for the Colorado River Steering Committee.
- Manages a broad spectrum of partnership programs. Manages and directs the parks’ partnerships and public awareness programs, encompassing concessions, public use management, stewardship, and community outreach.
- Provides coordination, leadership, and direction to complex law enforcement, emergency services, boat patrol, and aviation programs.
- Responsible for the planning, development, and operation of comprehensive education and interpretative programs.
