HRA is seeking an Architectural Historian 2 in our Portland, Oregon, office to join our collaborative team of experts.
What you’ll be doing:
As an Architectural Historian 2, you will be performing research tasks, fieldwork, and/or writing tasks as part of a high-performing, collaborative project team. Working in partnership with project managers, you will lead field surveys and contribute to the preparation of technical reports and client deliverables and could prepare the larger shares of some reports.

Who you are:
You are a professional Architectural Historian in the cultural resources management field, looking to grow your career in a supportive and collaborative environment while actively driving projects to success. You thrive while working with a team, and you have a knack for developing positive relationships with all levels of an organization and its clients.
What you need:
You have:
- A Master’s degree or PhD in Architectural History, Art History, Historic Preservation, or closely related field.
- Meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in Architectural History.
- A minimum of three years’ experience in cultural resources management, which may include:
- Survey and inventory.
- Cultural resources reporting, research, and writing.
- Teaching American architectural history or restoration architecture with an academic institution, historical organization, agency, museum, or other professional institution.
- A substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American architectural history.
You also have:
- Experience with applying local, state, and federal (36 CFR Part 800) cultural resources policies and procedures in a professional and technical capacity.
- Technical writing experience and experience in archival research, using archival and online collections, ethnographies, cultural resources reports, SHPO databases, GLO plats, land patents, and tax assessments.
- The ability to work in physically challenging environments, in all weather conditions, and walk several miles per day across varied terrain during field survey.
- The ability to develop and maintain positive relationships by listening and communicating effectively, providing and accepting feedback, and resolving conflict via communication and collaboration.
- The ability to take direction from project managers and other supervisors and collaborate with team members.
Travel:
Up to 50 percent of your time will be spent in the field. Travel throughout the Pacific Northwest is most likely, but up to 30 percent of travel may be located outside the region.
