The position is located in Kapolei, Oahu.
Salary: $110,000 – $115,000/year

Duties Summary

This position is located within the Inter-Agency Section of the Archaeological Branch and reports to the Archaeology Branch Chief.  This position will perform the duties of a senior archaeologist handling the full range of archaeological duties and issues, including the most complex analyses, reviews, and document preparation, and, when assigned or delegated, perform supervisory responsibilities of archaeological activities and subordinate archaeological personnel, and may also oversee the daily archaeological operations of an assigned agency or agencies. This position is responsible for properly documenting in writing all determinations, recommendations, and investigations; for maintaining records and files in an orderly fashion to ensure public access; for supervising, mentoring, and developing subordinate personnel; and performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Citizenship Requirement:  Applicants must be citizens, permanent resident aliens, or nationals of the United States. Non-citizens with unrestricted employment authorization from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service may also apply.

Recommended Qualifications:

Knowledge of:  Must be familiar with State and Federal burial and historic preservation laws, rules, and regulations.  Must have knowledge of archaeological field standards and the ability to independently identify adherence to these standards.  Must also be familiar with Microsoft Office, GIS, and ArcView.

Skills/Abilities to:  Must be able to interpret and apply laws and regulations.   Must possess leadership skills which include the ability to direct all review work for assigned agency or agencies and establish positive working relationships with government and private entities.  Participate in rough terrain field work; prepare reports; determine appropriate procedures and discern and evaluate cultural concerns and implement them; identify and evaluate archaeological and cultural sites; coordinate work with other professionals on the staff and with other government agencies; deal effectively with the general public and their representative; and a demonstrated ability to carry work to completion, usually shown by completed publications and manuscripts.

Recommended Education:  A graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field.

Recommended Experience:  At least four (4) years of work experience in archaeology, at least two (2) of which should be in Hawaiian/Pacific archaeology, conducting field and analytical work, including report preparation or review for compliance with State and Federal laws.

Supervisory Experience:  One (1) year of supervisory experience, which included planning and directing the work of others, assigning and reviewing their work, advising them on difficult problem areas, and evaluating their performance.

Substitutions Allowed:  Excess work experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis, provided that the knowledge, skills, and abilities are comparable to those acquired in four years of successful study while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree.  To be acceptable, the experience must have been of such scope, level, and quality as to assure the possession of comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities.

License Requirement:  Applicants with a valid license, type 3 or higher, to drive in the State of Hawaii is preferred.

Quality of Experience:  Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position.  The applicant’s overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that they have the ability to perform the duties of the position for which they are being considered.

This position is exempt from the civil service and considered temporary in nature.  Therefore, if you are appointed to the position, your employment will be considered to be “at will,” which means that you may be discharged from your employment at the prerogative of your department head or designee at any time.
