Job Description:
The Great Basin Institute (GBI) is hiring a Processing Archivist Research Associate (RA) to work cooperatively with The National Park Service’s Bryce Canyon National Park (BRCA) Cultural Resource Program staff in support of multiple archives projects.

The Processing Archivist responsibilities will have a strong emphasis on processing (including, but not limit to, appraising, arranging, rehousing, and preservation) and describing record groups of Bryce Canyon National Park records. Work would include appropriate arrangement of archival records to (1) provide a fixed and known location for every collection so that it can be referenced, and (2) bring related materials together in some logical order to increase accessibility.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Process, arrange, describe, and provide access to physical and digital archival collection according to NPS museum and records management policies and procedures that are specifically related to previous and ongoing projects at the park according to current Processing Plans
  • Uses Interior Collection Management System to enter, retrieve, manipulate, and compile archives data;
  • Learns and utilizes records appraisal guided by standardized documentation like NPS-19 and the REIM guide;
  • Learns and utilizes archival description to the DACS standard and writes metadata for collections;
  • Performs collection recordkeeping such as preliminary inventories, processing plans, and creating finding aids;
  • Assists with research requests both in-house and through email;
  • Creates section 508 compliant finding aids to publish online. Increases digital accessibility for researchers and the public.
  • Additionally, the Processing Archivist assists the Museum Curator and BRCA Lead Archivist with broader museum and archives tasks, including annual inventories, collection tours, rehousing collections, pest management, and environmental monitoring

Contract Timeline:

  • 52-week appointment
  • Possibility of extension pending performance and funding availability
  • Full time (40 hours/week)

While working on Bryce Canyon National Park records, this position will be duty stationed at Zion National Park working under the direction of the Zion Group Museum Curator. Travel between Parks to accomplish archival work is necessary. Zion National Park is a unique geological, natural, and cultural treasure in southwestern Utah. Opportunities for sightseeing, hiking, and camping abound. Humans have occupied this area for approximately 10,000 years and archaeological sites occur throughout the park. Work will be based out of park offices in Springdale, UT.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Wage: $21.50/hr

Job Qualifications:

Degree in library sciences, history, anthropology, museum studies or related field;

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in archival collections management, including appraisal, processing, arrangement, description, cataloging, preservation, and research;
  • Experience entering archival metadata into the Interior Collections Management System (ICMS) database or other similar software.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, possessing strong organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with a diverse audience, including co-workers, members of the public, and agency personnel;
  • Intermediate or higher skills using Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate, and graphically display data;
  • Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities with a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work productively, consistently, and independently or cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;
  • Ability to complete activities involving prolonged periods of deskwork, lifting and moving heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more, and regularly walking/driving between curation and other facilities;
  • Possess a valid, clean state-issued driver’s license; and
  • Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the goals and objectives of the position and the mission of GBI.
