Augustana University is seeking a Staff Archaeologist for the Sioux Falls, SD campus. The Staff Archaeologist will be responsible for conducting archaeological research, cultural resource management (CRM), and historic preservation projects for the Augustana University Archaeology Laboratory. Work may include CRM projects for the purpose of obtaining Section 106 compliance for clients as well as research projects funded by grants or sponsoring agencies, such as state historical societies. Public outreach activities may also be undertaken. The applicant must be willing and able to travel for up to 10 days at a time for fieldwork. Priority will be given to applications received before April 5, 2024.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct archaeological literature searches, desktop studies, monitoring, pedestrian surveys and subsurface excavations, as required, for CRM compliance projects, working independently or as part of a team.
    • Complete any necessary federal, state, or tribal permit applications.
    • Complete pedestrian surveys according to state standards (e.g., visibility and transect requirements).
    • Utilize subsurface test excavations (i.e., soil cores and shovel tests) as dictated by state requirements and on-the-ground conditions.
    • Complete site recordation or evaluation to state and/or Section 106 standards.
    • Complete official state site forms and obtain site numbers from appropriate state office.
    • Perform archaeological site excavation if required, including shovel skimming, troweling, screening, mapping and photography of units and features, and completion of written excavation records.
  • Work independently or as part of a team on routine lab processing and analysis of lithic, ceramic, and bone “artifacts”, and other faunal and floral material recovered.
  • Write technical reports or sections of reports that meet or exceed state and federal standards and guidelines.
  • Participate, under the direction of a Principal Investigator, in field and laboratory components of archaeological investigations funded by grants or sponsoring agencies.
  • Assist with responses to requests for proposals, including costs and research designs.
  • Assist with establishing project procedures, budget and timeline, and assure that work is completed efficiently and effectively.
  • Interact in a professional and courteous manner with landowners, clients, tribal representatives, governmental agency staff, colleagues, students, and all members of the Augustana community.
  • Assist in organizing and maintaining field equipment and vehicles.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Education: B.A. or B.S. degree in anthropology/archaeology or related discipline.
  • Experience: One year of archaeological experience (can include archaeological field school).
  • Experience in Northern Plains archaeology preferred but not required.
  • GIS and Arc View familiarity helpful but not required.

Minimum Salary: $20.27/hour.
