Augustana University is seeking a Senior Archaeologist for the Sioux Falls, SD campus. The Senior Archaeologist will direct archaeological research, cultural resource management (CRM), and historic preservation projects for the Augustana University Archaeology Laboratory. The applicant must have strong writing skills and be familiar with the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 106. The successful applicant must be willing and able to travel for up to 10 days at a time for fieldwork. Priority will be given to applications received before April 5, 2024.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out management of both small- and large-scale projects, establish project procedures and budget, schedule personnel, ensure that work is of professional quality and that the compliance process is completed.
  • Assure that projects are concluded within budget and on schedule.
  • Positively interact with a variety of clients and governmental agencies.
  • Lead and supervise field crews in a variety of environments; may involve surveying, recording and/or excavating archaeological sites.
  • Supervise and/or perform analysis of survey and excavation data.
  • Prepare well-written technical reports and documents that meet or exceed agency standards and guidelines.
  • Remain current with various agency requirements for conducting cultural resources work as well as with pertinent professional literature.
  • Interact with students and avocational archeologists, including providing training in field, analytical, and office techniques and skills.
  • Oversee maintenance of field equipment and vehicles
  • Act in the absence of the Director if necessary.
  • Prepare proposals and research designs.
    • Respond to requests for competitive cost proposals for small-and large-scale projects.
    • Respond to Requests for Proposals for larger projects (some may be multi-year) that may require research designs, demonstrations of qualifications and cost proposals.
    • Write proposals for both CRM and research or historic preservation projects.
    • Seek funding sources to enhance and develop the Archaeology Laboratory’s grant and contract base.
    • Contribute to grant proposals for both small- and large-scale projects.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Education: Postgraduate degree in archaeology or anthropology.
  • Experience: Two years full-time archaeological supervisory and fieldwork experience and demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
  • Experience in cultural resource management and NHPA compliance required.
  • Exceed the minimum standards for a professional archaeologist as defined by the Secretary of the Interior (36CFR61).
  • Experience in Northern Plains archaeology preferred but not required.
  • One year of supervisory archaeological field experience as a Principal Investigator strongly preferred.
  • GIS and Arc View familiarity helpful but not required.

Minimum Salary: $25.32/hour.
