Archaeological/Historical Consultants seeks an Architectural Historian I or Historian I to join our team immediately. Established in 1976, we are a small full-service cultural resources management firm based in Oakland, California, with work primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area and nearby counties. This is a hybrid position, with a minimum of 2 days per week in our office in Oakland. You must be based in the Bay Area – this is NOT a remote position. This is a full-time position (minimum of 30-40 hours/week). We are looking for someone who is able to work efficiently and independently on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment while meeting established deadlines. The ideal candidate has a high level of organization, attention to detail, and excellent technical writing skills. You will be working on a wide variety of projects and collaborating with team members, clients, and other professionals.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Historical research at physical and online repositories
- Preparing detailed land use and building histories
- Assisting with historic context statements for properties, districts, themes, and cities
- Assisting with field survey, recording, and photography of buildings and structures
- Assisting with evaluation of built environment resources under National Register, California Register, and local criteria
- Preparing CEQA and Section 106 technical reports and DPR 523 forms
- Section 106 consultation with interested parties
- Document production and data management
Required Qualifications:
- BA/BS or MA/MS in History, Architectural History, History, or related field
- 1-2 years relevant experience
- Demonstrated ability to conduct thorough, detail-oriented archival research using both physical and online repositories
- Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills
- Knowledge of citation and bibliography formats
- Familiarity with property history research (such as Sanborn maps, aerial photographs, building permits, appraiser’s files, historic newspaper research, genealogy, title search)
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Acrobat Acrobat and Creative Suite, and Google Earth
- For field work: the ability to walk on rough terrain, stand/walk for long periods, and lift loads up to 25 pounds
- A current California driver’s license and willingness to travel to field sites throughout Northern and Central California
Desirable Qualifications:
- Familiarity with California and Bay Area history, specifically residential, commercial, agricultural, and industrial architectural styles and themes
- Knowledge of CEQA, NHPA Section 106, NRHP and CRHR criteria, and the Secretary of the Interior’s Treatment Standards
- Previous experience recording and evaluating buildings
- Basic knowledge of GIS and citation management software such as Zotero
- Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Architectural History (36 CFR Part 61)
Pay ranges from $30.00-$38.00/hour depending on experience and qualifications.
