Position Description:
Acacia Heritage Consulting is a growing cultural resources consulting firm based in Austin and San Antonio, Texas. We are a small, woman-owned business serving a variety of clients and business sectors, including the federal government, state and local governments, DOTs, the energy sector, and private clients building the places and infrastructure of tomorrow. We offer consulting and expertise to promote economic development through heritage awareness and preservation because we believe there are tangible, quantifiable, and long-term economic benefits to historic preservation.
We are looking to hire a full time senior-level individual to manage our workloads in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Arkansas. This full-time position can be remote with work from home, or in person from Acacia’s San Antonio, Texas office. It will require frequent travel to and from job sites in Texas and adjacent states, and to meet with other staff in the home office. The ideal candidate need not be based in Austin or San Antonio but ideally should be based in Texas, a nearby state, or willing to relocate. The position is for mid-level professionals who seek an opportunity to expand their professional range, management skills, and operational footprint with an emerging company.
Working with Acacia’s core team of talented staff, and under direct supervision of company principals, this person will not only manage small and large scall projects, but also assist in managing a rapidly growing archaeology program. In this role key duties include:
- Serving as Principal Investigator to plan, implement, and manage small and large scale projects.
- Developing appropriate field and lab methodologies for cultural resources projects and communicating those to junior staff.
- Leading and supervising staff for all phases of archaeological investigations including fieldwork, research and artifact analysis.
- Writing and editing technical reports that apply National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility criteria.
- Documenting and evaluating cultural resources.
- Coordinating regulatory compliance efforts with federal, state, and municipal agencies.
- Supervising and mentoring junior staff in the field and office.
- Interfacing with and building clientele.
- Budgeting and writing proposals for new projects.
The ideal candidate should be able to manage time independently, adhere to established budgets and schedules, maintain a professional demeanor, and interact productively with team members to meet deadlines and team goals. This position will involve travel but also offers an opportunity to take on greater responsibility for business development and operations over time. We are seeking a candidate who wishes to mature within a dynamic and fast-growing small business.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or related field with completion of an accredited archaeological field school and meets the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) professional standards for archaeology.
- The ability to successfully plan and implement cultural resources surveys, testing and data recovery projects.
- Ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Ability to work with a team to execute project deliverables.
- Ability to work from home or from San Antonio office.
- Ability to travel and to conduct archaeological fieldwork, including walking/hiking up to 8 miles a day, excavate shovel tests, climb in an out of trenches and excavation units, and work in 95-degree heat.
- 6-8 years of previous archaeological experience, with at least three years as a Principal Investigator or higher.
- Knowledge of Federal and State preservation laws and regulations in the states where Acacia works, as well as NEPA, and Section 404 Permitting requirements.
- Experience working in Texas and surrounding states.
- Previous experience directing field crews and in project management.
- Demonstrated track record of primary authorship on cultural resource reports, research studies, or peer-reviewed publications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, QGIS, the ESRI suite of software, and digital field data collection (GPS or mobile application).
- The ability to work successfully in a collaborative environment.
- A valid driver’s license.
- True grit and determination.
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
- Specialized skills and expertise in one or more of the following: historical research, lithic analysis, faunal analysis, human osteology, geophysical studies, or analysis of pre-contact period ceramics.
- A PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, Geography, or related field.
- Experience in other regions of the country outside of Texas.
- A proven track record of operations development and project management.
- Prior cultural resources program management.
Additional Information:
Estimated time in the field could be up to 20 percent of the time. This is full-time salaried position. Compensation will be based on education and experience.
