Our support of various industries and governmental agencies spans the biological sciences, archaeology and architectural history, and civil engineering and ranges geographically across the U.S.

ESI seeks a full-time Architectural Historian to support CRM projects, primarily located throughout the central and eastern US. The position involves direct participation in, and management of, multi-disciplinary project teams throughout the entirety of the project life cycle from scoping and design, through permitting, construction, maintenance, and decommissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct archival and historical research using a variety of primary and secondary sources.
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage all aspects of architectural field surveys, including occasional travel to project locations (up to 30% travel expected).
  • Document historic buildings, structures, and districts through field investigations, photography, and data collection.
  • Prepare technical reports, historic contexts, survey documentation, and other deliverables in compliance with agency standards and guidelines.
  • Evaluate historic properties for eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Assess potential project effects on historic properties and develop cultural resource management recommendations.
  • This position reports directly to the Cultural Resources Group Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in architectural history, art history, historic preservation, or related field.
  • At least two years of full-time consulting experience associated with architectural history.
  • Current knowledge of regions including the Mid-Atlantic, Appalachia, and the Midwest, with willingness to expand regional expertise.
  • Strong comprehensive understanding and knowledge of federal and state cultural resource management regulations encompassing several industries.
  • Demonstrated report writing experience.
  • Exceptional personal time management and prioritization skills, and excellent verbal and written communication proficiency.

Requirements

  • Five years of relevant field experience.
  • Able to pass all pre-hire screenings.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

Salary & Benefits

ESI has standardized and transparent pay ranges based upon education and experience.  The anticipated base annual salary pay range for the qualifications listed above is $60,000 to $80,000 per year. Individuals with more or less experience are invited to apply, with the understanding that the associated salary will likewise vary accordingly.
