Congress is about to determine how much federal funding SHPOs and THPOs will receive in the next fiscal year – and we need your help in asking representatives to support robust funding.

The Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) is the primary federal funding mechanism for historic preservation activities across the country — supporting S/THPOs, underserved communities, and a host of critical survey, planning, and stewardship functions.

Last year, the White House proposed eliminating nearly all HPF funding – including zeroing out funds for S/THPOs. Thanks to the concerted advocacy efforts of CRM professionals and our partners, Congress rejected those cuts.

This year, we are asking Congress to provide $250 million from the HPF, including an additional $25 million for S/THPOs to upgrade their technology and digitize records. As Congress considers permitting reform legislation, supporting technology upgrades will help accelerate the Section 106 process without undercutting it.

This funding will not only improve the Section 106 process; it will help support jobs in the CRM and historic preservation sectors; strengthen S/THPO capacity to carry out Section 106 and other review functions; fund surveys, National Register nominations, and preservation planning in communities of all sizes; and invest in the preservation of places that matter to all Americans.
