Acacia Heritage Consulting is hiring a permanent, salaried full-time Project Archeologist
Pay Range:
$62,000-$80,000 annually DOE
Position Description:
Acacia Heritage Consulting is a growing cultural resources consulting firm based in Austin, Texas. We are a small, woman-owned business serving a variety of clients and business sectors building the places and infrastructure of tomorrow.
We are looking to hire a full time Project Archeologist-level individual to support our increasing workload in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. This full-time position is a remote, work-from-home position, but will require frequent travel to and from job sites in Texas and adjacent states, and to meet with other staff in the home office. The ideal candidate need not be based in Austin, but ideally should be based in Texas, a nearby state, or willing to relocate.
The position is for mid-level professionals who seek an opportunity to expand their professional range, management skills, and operational footprint with an emerging company.
Working with Acacia’s core team of talented staff, and under direct supervision of company principals, this person will provide assistance with project tasks at various levels including, but not limited to project planning and implementation, fieldwork and staff supervision, artifact analysis, research, technical reporting and overall project management. Responsibilities will include leading and supervising field staff for all phases of archeological investigations, writing technical reports that apply National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility criteria, developing appropriate field methodologies for cultural resources projects, recording and evaluating cultural resources, preparing maps using GIS software, analyzing artifacts, coordinating regulatory compliance efforts with federal, state, and municipal agencies, supervising and mentoring junior staff, and providing other support and technical assistance as needed.

Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology/Archeology or related field with completion of an accredited archeological field school
- The ability to successfully plan and implement cultural resources surveys, testing and data recovery projects.
- Ability to work with a team to execute project deliverables.
- Ability to work from home.
- Ability to travel to different project locations at least 40% of the time, to walk/hike and conduct fieldwork for 8-hr days, in inclement weather, or rugged terrain.
- 3-5 years of previous archeological experience, with at least two years as a field supervisor or higher.
- Experience using a GPS and collecting data using digital applications.
- Knowledge of Federal and State preservation laws and regulations in the states where Acacia works, as well as NEPA, and Section 404 Permitting requirements.
- Experience working in Texas and surrounding states.
- Previous experience directing field crews and in project management.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, QGIS, and the ESRI suite of software
- The ability to work successfully in a collaborative environment.
- A valid driver’s license.
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
- Master’s degree in Anthropology or closely related field that meets the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) professional standards for archaeology.
- Specialized skills and expertise in one or more of the following: historical research, lithic analysis, faunal analysis, human osteology, geophysical studies, or analysis of pre-contact period ceramics.
- Experience working with FHWA guidelines and state departments transportation (DOTs)
- Experience in other regions of the county.
- A track record of operations development and project management.

Estimated time in the field is 40-50% initially, with the potential for less travel over time. This is full-time salaried position. Compensation will be based on education and experience.
