Duties

The Associate Director, Visitor and Resource Protection (VRP) reports to the NPS Deputy Director for Operations and is responsible for leading the following eight national divisions that encompass 30 program areas and manages a workforce of over 850 employees: 1) Law Enforcement Security, and Emergency Services; 2) United States Park Police; 3) Fire and Aviation Management; 4) Risk Management; 5) Public Health Services; 6) Regulations, Jurisdiction, and Special Park Uses; 7) Wilderness Stewardship; and 8) Office of Public Trust. The Associate Director carries out the following responsibilities:

  • Serves as principal advisor on protection and emergency service matters for NPS facilities, sites, natural and cultural resources, visitors, and employees; as well as establishes policies to provide security, law enforcement, protection of critical infrastructure and facilities, and protection of natural and cultural resources.
  • Develops and implements program objectives, goals, and priorities that improve VRP strategic direction and effectiveness.
  • Addresses potential threats to NPS sites and visitors by utilizing the balanced strategy of prevention, preparedness, detection, response, crisis management, and consequence management.
  • Ensures communication and data networks are in place as they impact Federal security responsibilities.
  • Organizes and leads task forces and work groups focusing on special initiatives or issues crosscutting the program functions of the VRP Directorate. Coordinates with the leadership of the Department of the Interior, the White House, FBI, Homeland Security, and other federal agencies, as well as state and local authorities, on matters involving protection, security, safety, and emergency services that impact NPS.
  • Directs operations related to administration, including budget management and human resource management.
