PaleoWest / Commonwealth Heritage Group, a national full-service heritage management and consulting firm, is seeking a professionally qualified and experienced architectural historian for a full-time position in our Milwaukee, Wisconsin office. This position will involve providing technical expertise and leadership to guide a variety of projects for our clients in the private and public sectors through the environmental and historic preservation compliance processes. The successful candidate will serve as key staff at the regional level in the Upper Midwest and as part of our growing national historic resources program. This position also will serve a project management role.

Job Responsibilities
- Working with our team of cultural resource professionals to plan, organize, and manage historic resource surveys and other investigative work related to the identification, evaluation, and assessment of effects to historic properties.
- Supervising project architectural historians and principal investigators.
- Reviewing technical reports and supporting documentation and performing final QA/QC before client submittal.
- Developing proposals and cost estimates and providing support to clients during the scoping phases of projects.
- Regularly communicating with clients to keep them informed of project progress, review project schedule, and ensure all project needs are being addressed in a timely manner and within budget.
- Coordinating project review with state and federal agencies, including various State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs).
Qualifications
- A master’s degree in historic preservation or related field, such as history, architectural history, or public history.
- At least five years of experience conducting historical research, completing historic resource surveys, and evaluating the historic and architectural significance of properties under National Register of Historic Places criteria.
- An excellent understanding of state and federal historic preservation laws and regulations, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
- Knowledge of historic Midwestern architectural forms, styles, and trends, and the various historic
property types and characteristic of the region. - Exceptional research, technical writing, and communication skills.
- The ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Project management experience.
- Ability to prepare technical and cost proposals
- Experience in Wisconsin and other Midwestern states is a plus but not necessary.
- GIS experience also is a plus.
- Some travel throughout Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest will be required.
