Maryland Environmental Service has an opening for a Manager, Environmental Projects – Archaeologist within the Technical and Environmental Services Group to work at the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Secretary’s Office of the Environment at their offices in Hanover, MD and at project/field locations as required. The qualified candidate will provide support to the Office of the Environment and work under the direction of Chief of Cultural Resources.
Duties involve reviewing cultural resource laws and procedures for each of MDOT’s Transportation Business Units (TBUs), identifying consultation processes with local communities and making recommendations to improve outreach efforts, making recommendations about the level of cultural resource support each of the TBUs may require, identifying and implementing best practices in cultural resource management within each of the TBUs, and participating in agreements between state and federal agencies to facilitate cultural resources coordination.
The cultural resources professional will coordinate with state agencies, historical organizations, and the public, with an emphasis on historically disadvantaged communities and histories. The successful candidate will also be responsible for assisting individuals and groups who nominate historic markers to be placed along state roads. As such, the position will carry out historical research to confirm legitimate sources for historic marker applications and coordinate these applications with the Maryland Historical Trust. Finally, the position includes contributions to archaeological research directed by MDOT. Field participation, archival research, public outreach, and report writing will be required for public outreach projects including Harriet Tubman’s Birthplace, a multi-year archaeological project.
Although overnight travel is not common, field projects may require overnight stays to collect information on historic sites, attend meetings, and participate in field observations and documentation; less than 20% of time will be spent in the field.
Estimated Pay Range:
$70,557.52 – $97,016.59

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelors Degree in environmental science, engineering, ecology, anthropology or a related field from an accredited college or university plus eight years of experience in environmental science, regulations, engineering or management, five years of which must have included responsibility managing environmental projects and supervising environmental professional and technical staff, or responsibility planning, supervising, and conducting cultural resources evaluations, and managing and reviewing consultant work products to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations. Applicants may substitute an applicable advanced education degree for up to two years of required experience. Must have a valid driver’s license with less than 5 points.
The preferred candidate will have demonstrated the ability to successfully complete projects and assignments, including formal writing of reports and official correspondence, and have extensive experience in Maryland or the Chesapeake Bay region. Preferred but not required experience also includes familiarity with transportation projects, compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, project management skills, and GIS skills. Additionally, preferred skills include familiarity with African American history, community outreach, and archaeological field experience.
