Come Tour Historic Philadelphia With ACRA!
Guided Bus Tour to Eastern State Penitentiary and Fairmount Water Works

While Philadelphia is best known for its 18th-century history, it is also the site of some of our most renowned 19th and 20th century architecture. Join your guide, Dr. Ian Burrow, on this unique and exciting bus trip to visit two of Philadelphia’s most interesting places. Attendees will see the Eastern State Penitentiary, the world’s first reform jail and one of our country’s best examples of early Gothic Revival architecture. See the cell where Al Capone was held and view this historic wonder, left in its raw state. Guests will also hear about the exciting archaeological dig held on the ground to identify an escape tunnel! Also on the agenda is a visit to the 19th-century Fairmount Water Works, an engineering marvel that kept water flowing to the urban core of Philadelphia for almost 100 years. Both of these sites are National Historic Landmarks and not to be missed! Other sites northwest of the old city may be include if time allows.

One of the five original open-space parks planned by William Penn, Rittenhouse Square is rated among the finest urban public spaces in the country. Tour attendees will hear the history of this part of Philadelphia and see some of the most beautiful and stately architecture in the city.
