Executive Director of the American Cultural Resources Association

ACRA is the trade association supporting and promoting the interests of cultural resource management (“CRM”) firms in the United States. ACRA’s member firms employ thousands of cultural resources professionals and undertake many of the CRM studies and investigations in the United States. ACRA actively promotes best practices within the CRM industry to balance development and preservation responsibly.

ACRA is an established trade association in its twenty-third year. In the past several years, ACRA has strengthened its position as an organization, developed new management procedures and strong financial underpinnings, and has greatly expanded its political advocacy. ACRA has developed an ambitious strategic plan to grow the membership and promote the conditions that will allow the industry to grow and thrive.  ACRA’s annual budget is approximately $250,000. ACRA is governed by a strong board of directors and contracts with a lobbying firm to provide government relations support. ACRA now seeks to hire a full time executive director who will capitalize on ACRA’s strengths and guide the organization to implement its strategic vision. This vision includes growing and maintaining our membership, and considering the feasibility of developing a credentialing process for ACRA members, as well as identifying and developing additional member benefits. ACRA’s new Executive Director will provide leadership and guidance and reliable, detail-oriented management and administrative support.

The Opportunity

ACRA has decided to move away from management support provided by association management firms and to hire a full time executive director who can help lead the organization to implement its strategic vision. This position provides the opportunity to support a thriving CRM industry, implement new benefits for trade association members, and grow the organization’s support and influence.

ACRA’s new executive director can work from a home office anywhere in the U.S. This is a full time position. Salary range is $55,000-65,000 depending on experience.

Core Responsibilities

The Executive Director will be responsible for executing on the ACRA strategic plan, which includes the following tasks and priorities:

  • Management
    • Establish and help implement work plans for each of ACRA’s committees to further strategic goals, in coordination with ACRA Board and Committees
    • Regular calls with ACRA President, President-Elect, and Treasurer and Committee Chairs, as needed
  • Communications
    • Develop and execute an external communications plan that includes outreach to members and client industries
    • Represent ACRA to client industries and the general public, including professional representation of ACRA at conferences and meetings
    • Develop and execute an internal communications plan to facilitate communications among members
    • Collect updates from committees and format and send member emails, approx. 1-4 mass emails per month
    • Maintain and update the website, currently managed through WildApricot
    • Assist Newsletter Editor and Communication Committee in producing 3 newsletters per year
    • Assist with maintenance of social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn
  • Board Support
    • Report to board on organization management issues, including quarterly reports to the board
    • Schedule board meetings and manage logistics, including room reservations, catering, etc.
    • Collate board book materials quarterly from board and committee chairs for board meeting
    • Facilitate ACRA board elections in concert with the Nominations Committee
    • Maintain ACRA files and corporate records
  • Fundraising and Sponsor Management
    • Pursue and secure new potential ACRA sponsors
    • Retain existing sponsors
    • Invoice current sponsors and collect sponsorship funds
  • Member Services
    • Provide recommendations to committee on how to increase and retain membership
    • Provide service to existing members; respond to member inquiries by phone and email
    • Maintain member database (currently WildApricot) and ensure its accuracy
    • Send member invoices and receive payments
    • Send welcome packets to new members
  • Webinar Series
    • Solicit webinar providers and brainstorm webinar ideas with Continuing Education Subcommittee
    • Coordinate with webinar providers regarding agreement with ACRA, schedule webinars, and learn/facilitate GotoWebinar system
    • Advertise webinars on email lists, social media, professional networks, and paid advertising
    • Provide technical assistance to members during online learning opportunities, which are offered through GoToWebinar (6-10 times per year)
  • Finances
    • Provide information to our bookkeeper and Treasurer to ensure accurate books
    • Run reports in Stripe, our credit card processor
    • Provide information to and coordinate with the Treasurer when needed
  • Conference (Conference attendance is approximately 120 to 140)
    • Participate in planning meetings
    • Contract with venue
    • Organize ACRA business meeting to be held at conference
    • Coordinate with Conference Committee on conference location and procedures
    • Help interface with conference venue and assist the conference committee in managing logistics, including food service, room reservations, etc.
    • Update conference page on website and manage other conference communications using ACRA membership software (currently WildApricot), Mailchimp, and social media
    • Assist with production of conference programs, nametags, and other materials
    • Coordinate keynote speaker and awards presentation with committee
    • Solicit vendors and prepare materials to advertise vendors to attendees
    • Work with President to coordinate, plan, and execute Past-President's Social
    • Retain photographer for notable conference events
    • Arrange for general liability insurance for event
    • Provide on-site support staffing registration table at our annual conference

Key Credentials and Personal Qualities

  • Working understanding of the professional consulting industry and interest to learn about the cultural resource management industry
  • Executive experience running a successful trade association, nonprofit organization, or for-profit business
  • Demonstrated experience in a member- or employee-based work environment that involved relating to a diverse group of stakeholders
  • Experience in the governance of a non-profit organization
  • Experience with developing or running a credentialing program
  • Commitment to results; “can-do” mindset with emphasis on accountability
  • Experience at change leadership and change management
  • Strong motivational and leadership abilities
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Sense of humor, integrity, strong work ethic
  • Fluency in word processing software and ability to learn new software and digital tools (working knowledge of WildApricot, MailChimp, SurveyMonkey, Basecamp, etc., is a plus)
  • Availability to travel 3-4 times per year
