ACRA Announces Awards Competition at Annual Meeting

In an attempt to boost competition and participation in the ACRA awards process, we will hold a popular competition at the annual meeting. This competition rewards good presentations to other professionals, your clients, and your communities. It’s EASY. Bring your best work, sign it in at the awards table, and then evaluate the entries brought by your peers. Instructions below.

(We also suggest bartering reports with your fellow meeting attendees so you don't carry the same report home).

ACRA AWARDS AT THE MEETINGS will honor the high quality products of ACRA member firms, as recognized by their peers.  The product can be in the form of innovative or long-term research, preservation of a cultural resource for future generations (such as a building or archaeological site), or an outstanding report, book, brochure, etc. published in the past 3 years. The meeting is not equipped to show audiovisual products or print off/run CDs.

Two awards will be presented.  Every company in good standing with ACRA may submit one project per category. The Large Project Award will consist of any cultural resources management field or combination of fields whose total budget exceeds $50,000. The Small Project Award will consist of any cultural resources management field or combination of fields whose total budget is $50,000 or less.

Bring one copy of your report to the Award tables in the conference hotel foyer. Reports can be entered into the competition between your arrival on Thursday afternoon and 10:30 a.m on Friday morning. Ballots will be provided in registration packets. Voting will end 12:00 pm on Saturday and awards will be announced at the Business meeting on Saturday.  The report that gets the highest points total in each category will win.

Register Online | Sponsorship Opportunities

Gray & Pape, Inc. hosts the 2009 American Cultural Resources Association Annual Meeting set for September 17 – 20, 2009 at the historic Renaissance Providence Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island.

The featured speaker for the ACRA Annual Meeting is Reid Nelson. He is the Director of Federal Agency Programs at the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Nelson will discuss how federal agencies plan to implement Section 106 regulations under President Obama’s administration and how federal agencies will work to implement Section 106 regulations in the “shovel ready” stimulus package environment.

Nelson has worked at the ACHP for the past two years as an assistant director in the Office of Federal Agency Programs, in charge of the Federal Property Management section. He came to the ACHP with extensive experience in historic preservation after working with the Navajo Nation in its Archaeology and Historic Preservation Departments for 18 years, the last nine of which were as a program manager for the Navajo Nation Historic Preservation Department.

Other key features of the ACRA Annual Meeting are the educational sessions and networking opportunities.  Even though you might see ACRA members throughout the year, the Annual Meeting truly provides the opportunity to have face-to-face discussions in a social environment.

This is your chance to meet with many of the major Cultural Resources Management professionals in the industry. ACRA’s goal is to have as many professionals and others in attendance so that you can conduct meaningful business and learn what is happening. For 2009, the Schedule of Events is all business and education!  There are not blocks of vacant or unused time.  Your time is utilized to the maximum.  You can arrive on Thursday morning and leave on Sunday morning.

Here’s an added attraction for meeting participants: a special Dinner Cruise is planned for Saturday night, September 19 and is included in the registration fee. The first class amenities of the Majestic combined with the unsurpassed beauty of Rhode Island's Newport Harbor & Narragansett Bay make for an unforgettable experience on the bay. Delight in your favorite cocktail on one of the 3 outside decks while watching the sunset. Then savor a delicious three entrée buffet with 5 star service. After dinner, enjoy the ship’s entertainment while taking in the spectacular vista of Newport at night.

A major advantage for the Annual Meeting is the competitive airfares from most major cities.  Flying into the Providence International Airport offers attendees a wide variety of carriers including Southwest Airlines.  Check for yourself on www.sidestep.com or the Southwest website. The registration fees are very reasonable.   For ACRA members, the early registration fee is $290.00 per company registrant. This is an outstanding value as it includes the Presentations, Educational Sessions, Welcome Dinner, Friday and Saturday Breakfasts, Friday Reception, Breaks, Dinner Cruise and all conference materials. As a bonus to ACRA members companies registering more than one person, ACRA is offering a discounted registration fee of $255.00.

The next steps are yours. Plan to attend.  Mark your calendar for September 17 – 20. 2009. Complete the registration form and send it along with your check to ACRA HQs. Register today.
